First 100 days – day 19 Wisdom and Praise, January 19

Bible open to PsalmsWisdom and Praise
Psalm 19, 49, 79109, 139, and Proverb 19

There are songs, and cries for revenge.  There is beauty of being known, and the fear of being set aside.  There’s easy to embrace and difficult.  Proverbs has some interesting tidbits as well

Let’s dig in!

  • Psalm 19 KJV  The whole Psalm is a Go To Verse! great for memorizing.
    • milky way over a lake at night

      Ps 19:1-4 Creation declares God

      • The heavens declare the glory of God,
        and the sky[a] proclaims the work of His hands.
        Day after day they pour out speech;
        night after night they communicate knowledge.[b]
        There is no speech; there are no words;
        their voice is not heard.
        Their message[c] has gone out to all the earth,
        and their words to the ends of the world.
      • Romans 1:20
        • For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
    • Ps 19:7-11 a song that I sang on the video
      • The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
      • The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
      • The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether
      • 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
      • 11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
    • Ps 19:12-14 Prayer for help from sin – Go To Verses
      • 12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.
      • 13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
      • 14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.
    •  Songs for Psalm 19
  • Psalm 49 – Death comes to All
    • Ps 49:1-4
      • Hear this, all you peoples;
        listen, all who inhabit the world,
        both low and high,[a]
        rich and poor together.
        My mouth speaks wisdom;
        my heart’s meditation brings understanding.
        I turn my ear to a proverb;
        I explain my riddle with a lyre.
    • Ps 49:10 and following
      • For one can see that wise men die;
        foolish and stupid men also pass away.
        Then they leave their wealth to others.

      Ps 79:1-2

      • God, the nations have invaded Your inheritance,
        desecrated Your holy temple,
        and turned Jerusalem into ruins.
        They gave the corpses of Your servants
        to the birds of the sky for food,
        the flesh of Your godly ones
        to the beasts of the earth.
    • Ps 79:5-8 Prayer for deliverance from God’s Anger
      • How long, Yahweh? Will You be angry forever?
        Will Your jealousy keep burning like fire?
    • Ps 79:8- 9 prayer for forgiveness
      • 8 Do not hold past sins[a] against us;
        let Your compassion come to us quickly,
        for we have become weak.
      • 9 God of our salvation, help us—
        for the glory of Your name.

        because of Your name.
    • Ps 79:9-10 appealing to the reputation of God
      • Why should the nations ask,
        “Where is their God?”
        Before our eyes,
        let vengeance for the shed blood of Your servants
        be known among the nations.
    • Ps 79:13 Thanksgiving
      • Then we, Your people, the sheep of Your pasture,
        will thank You forever;
        we will declare Your praise
        to generation after generation.
  • Psalm 109 From David’s Prayer Journal
    • Ps 109:1-5 Prayer for deliverance
      • God of my praise, do not be silent.
      • For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me;
        they speak against me with lying tongues.
        They surround me with hateful words
        and attack me without cause.
        In return for my love they accuse me,
        but I continue to pray.[a]
        They repay me evil for good,
        and hatred for my love.
    • Ps 109:6-20 request for revenge
    • Ps 109:21- 31 Deliver me
      • 21 But You, Yahweh my Lord,
        deal kindly with me because of Your name;
        deliver me because of the goodness of Your faithful love.
        22 For I am afflicted and needy;
        my heart is wounded within me.
        23 I fade away like a lengthening shadow;
        I am shaken off like a locust.
        24 My knees are weak from fasting,
        and my body is emaciated.[f]
        25 I have become an object of ridicule to my accusers;[g]
        when they see me, they shake their heads in scorn.
      • 26 Help me, Lord my God;
        save me according to Your faithful love
        27 so they may know that this is Your hand
        and that You, Lord, have done it.
    • Ps 109: 30- 31 the conclusion of the matter
      • 30 I will fervently thank the Lord with my mouth;
        I will praise Him in the presence of many.

  • Psalm 139 – David’s Prayer Journal – the Blessing of being known
    • Ps 139:1-6 All Knowing God
      • Lord, You have searched me and known me.
        You know when I sit down and when I stand up;
        You understand my thoughts from far away.
        You observe my travels and my rest;
        You are aware of all my ways.
        Before a word is on my tongue,
        You know all about it, Lord.
        You have encircled me;
        You have placed Your hand on me.
        This extraordinary knowledge is beyond me.
        It is lofty; I am unable to reach it.
    • Ps 139:7-12 OmniPresent God
      • Where can I go to escape Your Spirit?
        Where can I flee from Your presence?
        If I go up to heaven, You are there;
        if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there.
        If I live at the eastern horizon
        or settle at the western limits,[a]
        10 even there Your hand will lead me;
        Your right hand will hold on to me.
        11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me,
        and the light around me will be night”—
        12 even the darkness is not dark to You.
        The night shines like the day;
        darkness and light are alike to You.
    • Psalm 139:13-16  Known before born, Go To

      • For it was You who created my inward parts;[b]
        You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
        14 I will praise You
        because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made.[c][d]
        Your works are wonderful,
        and I know this very well.
        15 My bones were not hidden from You
        when I was made in secret,
        when I was formed in the depths of the earth.
        16 Your eyes saw me when I was formless;
        all my days were written in Your book and planned
        before a single one of them began.

        • Jeremiah 1:15 I chose you before I formed you in the womb; I set you apart before you were born. I appointed you a prophet to the nations.
    • Ps 139:23-24 Humble before God, Go To Verse

        test me and know my concerns.
        24 See if there is any offensive[g] way in me;
        lead me in the everlasting way.

Ps 63:7 Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.

“The Lord does not give me rules, but He makes His standard very clear.
If my relationship to Him is that of love, I will do what He says without hesitation.
If I hesitate, it is because I love someone I have placed in competition with Him, namely, myself.” –

Wisdom and Praise
Psalms 14, 44, 74, 104, 134 and Proverb 14

Today’s readings again compare the righteous and the wicked,  remembering what God has done in the past and He will do it again, the struggles of discipline and the destruction of a special place.  We have a whole psalm dedicated to the Creator God and His glory. I sing another Psalm.  Proverbs has some tidbits for us about our heart and character. I found quite a few new songs!

Let’s dive in!

  • Psalm 14 From David’s Prayer Journal – The wicked
    • Ps 14:1 The fool[a] says in his heart,
          “There is no God.”
      They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
          there is no one who does good.
    • Ps 14:2-3 The Lord looks down from heaven
          on all mankind
      to see if there are any who understand,
          any who seek God.
      All have turned away, all have become corrupt;
          there is no one who does good,
          not even one.
    • Ps 14:7 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
          When the Lord restores his people,
          let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!
    • Psalm 14 by Psalms Project
  • Psalm 44 Remembering What the Lord has done
    • Ps 44:1  God, we have heard with our ears—
      our ancestors have told us—
      the work You accomplished in their days,
      in days long ago:
    • Ps 44:4 You are my King, my God,
      who ordains[a] victories for Jacob.
    • Ps 44:9-14 Discipline or what?
    • Ps 44:15 – 16 because of persecution
      • My disgrace is before me all day long,
        and shame has covered my face,
        16 because of the voice of the scorner and reviler,
        because of the enemy and avenger.
      • Matt 5:10
        • Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
              for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
      • Matt 5:11-12
        • “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
      • Persecution for beliefs feels like we are ignored by our God.  In fact, it is allowed, not caused, and this is for our good.
        • James 1: Consider it a great joy, my brothers, whenever you experience various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. But endurance must do its complete work, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.
    • Ps 44:23-26 Cry out to God for help in times of trouble!
      • Rise up! Help us!
        Redeem us because of Your faithful love.
    • Songs of Psalm 44
  • Psalm 74 – Crying out because of destruction
      • Ps 74:1 Out cry as His people
          • Why have You rejected us forever, God?
            Why does Your anger burn
            against the sheep of Your pasture?
      • Ps 74:3-11 Describing the Destruction
          • It was like men in a thicket of trees,
            wielding axes,
            then smashing all the carvings
            with hatchets and picks.
            They set Your sanctuary on fire;
            they utterly[c] desecrated
            the dwelling place of Your name.
      • Ps 74:12-17 Reminder the God of Creation
          • God my King is from ancient times,
            performing saving acts on the earth.
            13 You divided the sea with Your strength;
            You smashed the heads of the sea monsters in the waters;
      • Ps 74:18 – 23 Remember Your People
          • Rise up, God, defend Your cause!
            Remember the insults
            that fools bring against You all day long.
            23 Do not forget the clamor of Your adversaries,
            the tumult of Your opponents that goes up constantly.
      • Songs of Psalm 74
  • Psalm 104 Glory to God!
      • Ps 104:1- 4
          • My soul, praise Yahweh!
            Lord my God, You are very great;
            You are clothed with majesty and splendor.
            He wraps Himself in light as if it were a robe,
            spreading out the sky like a canopy,
            laying the beams of His palace
            on the waters above,
            making the clouds His chariot,
            walking on the wings of the wind,
            and making the winds His messengers,[a]
            flames of fire His servants.
        • Ps 104:5-26 God Created all things
            • :5 He established the earth on its foundations;
              it will never be shaken.
            • :10 He causes the springs to gush into the valleys;
              they flow between the mountains.
            • :16 The trees of the Lord flourish,[c]
              the cedars of Lebanon that He planted.
              17 There the birds make their nests;
              the stork makes its home in the pine trees.
            • :24 How countless are Your works, Lord!
              In wisdom You have made them all;
              the earth is full of Your creatures.[f]
        • Ps 104:27 – 30 The Relationship with God
            • :29-30 When You hide Your face,
              they are terrified;
              when You take away their breath,
              they die and return to the dust.
              30 When You send Your breath,[g]
              they are created,
              and You renew the face of the earth.
        • Ps 104:31 – 35 Song of Praise
            • :31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever;
              may the Lord rejoice in His works.
            • :33 – 34 I will sing to the Lord all my life;
              I will sing praise to my God while I live.
              34 May my meditation be pleasing to Him;
              I will rejoice in the Lord.

Wisdom and Praise Reading
Psalm 5, 35, 65, 95, 125 and Proverbs 5

Today, there is a lot about praying, and settling your mind, or setting your heart for the attitude of the day.  There is continued praying. Many of these are David’s prayer journal entries.  We can learn about heart attitudes from them, and take verses to strengthen our hearts in times of trial, depression and despair, as well as how to find joy in every situation and detail of life.

  •  Psalm 5 – Again, Crying out to God to be heard
    • Day 2, Day 3, Day 4
    • Psalm 5:1-2 Cry out
      • Listen to my words, Lord;
        consider my sighing.
        Pay attention to the sound of my cry,
        my King and my God,
        for I pray to You.
    • Psalm 5:3 Confession of faith
      • At daybreak, Lord, You hear my voice;
        at daybreak I plead my case to You and watch expectantly.
    • Psalm 5:4-6 listing things that come between us and God
    • Psalm 5:7 declaring that we can enter in
      • But I enter Your house
        by the abundance of Your faithful love;
        I bow down toward Your holy temple
        in reverential awe of You.
    • Psalm 5 continues with a request to be led in righteousness
    • Psalm 5:11-12 declaration of faith
      • But let all who take refuge in You rejoice;
        let them shout for joy forever.
        May You shelter them,
        and may those who love Your name boast about You.
        12 For You, Lord, bless the righteous one;
        You surround him with favor like a shield.
  • Psalm 35 – A longer Psalm, again, from David’s Prayer Journal
    • Psalm 35: 1-8 Prayers for deliverance and a defender
      • 1 – Oppose my opponents, Lord;
        fight those who fight me.
    • Psalm 35: 9-10 Declaring victory
      • Then I will rejoice in the Lord;
        I will delight in His deliverance.
        10 My very bones will say,
        Lord, who is like You,
        rescuing the poor from one too strong for him,
        the poor or the needy from one who robs him?”
    • Psalm 35:13-14 an attitude towards our enemies
      • Prayer –
      • when prayer is not answered, go to fasting
      • FOR OUR ENEMIES – do we do this for our family and friends?
    • Psalm 35:18 – a “go to” verse to declare in times of trouble
      • I will praise You in the great congregation;
        I will exalt You among many people.
    • Psalm 35:28 – a “go to” verse to declare to the Lord
      • And my tongue will proclaim Your righteousness,
        Your praise all day long.
    • Psalm 65 – sort of follows the Our Father –
      • Matthew 6:9 -13 (RSV)
        •  Pray then like this:

          Our Father who art in heaven,
          Hallowed be thy name.
          10 Thy kingdom come,
          Thy will be done,
              On earth as it is in heaven.
          11 Give us this day our daily bread;[a]
          12 And forgive us our debts,
              As we also have forgiven our debtors;
          13 And lead us not into temptation,
              But deliver us from evil.[b]

          Peace be with Israel.

Proverbs 5 – counsel to avoid the wicked woman – or to avoid being with an adulteress, and to avoid being unfaithful.  It describes the suffering that happens when one is loose with their sexual self.

There are many things in today’s readings. Some “go to” verses. Some songs. Prayers. Declarations of Faith. And then, counsel to keep yourself pure, and faithful. I hope that this has tweaked or tickled your mind on these readings and that you have found something from today to take with you, for now and forever.

M. Christine Wildman“The Lord does not give me rules, but He makes His standard very clear. If my relationship to Him is that of love, I will do what He says without hesitation. If I hesitate, it is because I love someone I have placed in competition with Him, namely, myself.” – from My Utmost for His highest
