Wisdom and Praise
Psalms 17, 47, 77, 107, 137 and Proverb 17

Today’s readings have much in common. Prayer for deliverance from wrongful accusations lays the groundwork for Prayerful remembrances to strengthen our faith. There are beautiful declarations of God’s love and faithfulness when the psalmist has been in distress, or historically.

Then there’s proverbs, with it’s tidbits on how we can have the Character of Christ – godly character – or wise character, whichever way you want to look at it.

Let’s dig in!

  • Psalm 17 – Prayer for when wrongly accused,betrayal
    • Ps 17:2-3   God’s determination is innocent
      • Let my vindication come from You,
        for You see what is right.
        You have tested my heart;
        You have examined me at night.
        You have tried me and found nothing evil;
        I have determined that my mouth will not sin.[a]
    • Ps 17:4-5 plus a bit of 3, how to behave when wrongly accused
      • 3 You have tried me and found nothing evil;

      • 4-5 Concerning what people do:
        by the word of Your lips[b]
        I have avoided the ways of the violent.
        My steps are on Your paths;
        my feet have not slipped.
    • Ps 17:6- 12 Prayer for protection, declaration of faith
      • 6 I call on You, God,
        because You will answer me;
        listen closely to me; hear what I say.

        • Ps 17:8 KJV Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,
        • Ps 27:5 For He will conceal me in His shelter in the day of adversity; He will hide me under the cover of His tent; He will set me high on a rock.
        • Ps 36:7 How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.
        • Psalm 57:1 For the choir director: “Do Not Destroy.” A Davidic Miktam. When he fled before Saul into the cave. Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me, for I take refuge in You. I will seek refuge in the shadow of Your wings until danger passes.
        • Ps 91:1KJV He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
        • Ps 32:7 KJV Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.
        • Ps 31:20 NIV In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues.
    • Ps 17:13-15 Prayer for defense
      • 13 Rise up, Lord!
        Confront him; bring him down.
        With Your sword, save me from the wicked.
      • 15 But I will see Your face in righteousness;
        when I awake, I will be satisfied with Your presence.[j]

  • Psalm 47 God Inhabits the Praises of His People
    • Ps 47:5  God ascends among shouts of joy,
      the Lord, among the sound of trumpets.

      • Ps 22:3 KJV But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
    • Warfare
      • James 4:7-8 NIV Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
    • Prayers are incense, lifted hands an offering
      • Ps 141:2 KJV Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
      • 1 Tim 2:8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.

    Psalm 77  Prayer during distress

    • Ps 77:1-2 I cry aloud to God,
      aloud to God, and He will hear me.
      I sought the Lord in my day of trouble.
      My hands were continually lifted up
      all night long;
      I refused to be comforted.
    • Ps 77:7-9 Questioning God – which is OK – it’s Bible
      • “Will the Lord reject forever
        and never again show favor?
        Has His faithful love ceased forever?
        Is His promise at an end for all generations?
        Has God forgotten to be gracious?
        Has He in anger withheld His compassion?”Selah
    • Ps 77:10-12 This is how to address questioning times
      • So I say, “I am grieved[a]
        that the right hand of the Most High has changed.”
        11 I will remember the Lord’s works;
        yes, I will remember Your ancient wonders.
        12 I will reflect on all You have done
        and meditate on Your actions.
    • Ps 77:13-20 Remembering Who God is.
      • 13-15 God, Your way is holy.
        What god is great like God?
        14 You are the God who works wonders;
        You revealed Your strength among the peoples.
        15 With power You redeemed Your people,
        the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.Selah

  • Psalm 107 The Acts of the Lord’s Faithful  Love
    • Ps 107:1 Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
      His faithful love endures forever.
    • several stories with repeated chorus’s
      • Ps 107:4 wandering in the desolate wilderness
        • THEY CRIED OUT
          • 6 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble;
            He rescued them from their distress.
        • HE DID –
          • 7 He led them by the right path
            to go to a city where they could live.
        •  RESPONSE
          • 8 Let them give thanks to the Lord
            for His faithful love
            and His wonderful works for all humanity.
      • Ps 107:10 some sat in darkness and gloom, prisoners
        • THEY CRIED OUT
          • 13 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble;
            He saved them from their distress.
        • HE DID
          • 14 He brought them out of darkness and gloom[f]
            and broke their chains apart.
        • RESPONSE
          • 15 Let them give thanks to the Lord
            for His faithful love
            and His wonderful works for all humanity.
      • Ps 107:17 Fools suffering affliction because of rebellion
        • (PATTERN FOR SINNERS)
        • THEY CRIED OUT
          • 19 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble;
            He saved them from their distress.
        • HE DID
          • 20 He sent His word and healed them;
            He rescued them from the Pit.
        • RESPONSE
          • 21 Let them give thanks to the Lord
            for His faithful love
            and His wonderful works for all humanity.
        • Ps 77:23 Others went to sea in ships
          • THEY CRIED OUT IN NEED
            • 28 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
              and He brought them out of their distress.
          • HE DID
            • 29He stilled the storm to a murmur,
              and the waves of the sea[j] were hushed.
              30 They rejoiced when the waves[k] grew quiet.
              Then He guided them to the harbor they longed for.
          • RESPONSE
            • 31 Let them give thanks to the Lord
              for His faithful love
              and His wonderful works for all humanity.
      • Ps 107:33-42 Praise for God establishing community
      • Ps 107:43 Let whoever is wise pay attention to these things
        and consider[l] the Lord’s acts of faithful love.

  • Psalm 137  Song of despair from captivity
      • A song from Godspell, one of my favorites
        • Ps 137:1-3  By the rivers of Babylon—
          there we sat down and wept
          when we remembered Zion.
          There we hung up our lyres
          on the poplar trees,
          for our captors there asked us for songs,
          and our tormentors, for rejoicing:
          “Sing us one of the songs of Zion.”
        • 4 How can we sing the Lord’s song
          on foreign soil?

  • Proverb 17 difficult people, and some Go To Verses
    • Pr 17: 1 PEACE! make Peace.
      • Better a dry crust with peace
        than a house full of feasting with strife.

        • Pr 17:14 To start a conflict is to release a flood;
          stop the dispute before it breaks out.
        • Pr 17:27 The intelligent person restrains his words,
          and one who keeps a cool head[e]
          is a man of understanding.
        • Ps 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine,
          but a broken spirit dries up the bones

    • Pr 17:3 Refining
      • A crucible for silver, and a smelter for gold,
        and the Lord is the tester of hearts.
    • Pr 17:6 Blessing
      • Grandchildren are the crown of the elderly,
        and the pride of sons is their fathers.
      • Pr 17:17 Go To
        • A friend loves at all times,
          and a brother is born for a difficult time.
    • Pr 17:21 Bitterness
      • A man fathers a fool to his own sorrow;
        the father of a fool has no joy.

        • Pr 17: 25 A foolish son is grief to his father
          and bitterness to the one who bore him
        • Pr 17:2 A wise servant will rule over a disgraceful son
          and share an inheritance among brothers.

          • Pr 10:3 Solomon’s proverbs: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son, heartache to his mother.
